Washington, DC – Today, the Board published its FY 2024 Annual Report, summarizing its work during the year. This includes a public roundtable event, reports on critical Social Security topics within the Board’s current research portfolios, and Board meetings to support that research.
Social Security Disability
When SSA determines that a person is eligible for disability benefits, the agency must take additional steps before paying out those benefits. These steps are known as the effectuation process. Data show that average effectuation times have increased over the past decade. The Board published a report that provides a detailed overview of SSA’s effectuation process and recommends changes SSA could make to its systems, policies, and operations to improve the speed and accuracy of effectuation.
Retirement
American workers today are taking varied and nontraditional routes to retirement, many of which involve either partial retirement or a return to work before permanently leaving the labor force. Retirees who claim retirement and continue to work have their benefits reduced by a little-understood Social Security policy called the retirement earnings test. The Board report describes the mechanics and application of this tool and ways to make it more accessible to workers so they can make informed choices regarding their retirement.
Supplemental Security Income
The Board’s virtual “SSI and Incarceration” roundtable was held on September 9, 2024. Panelists shared their experience in providing direct services to people who are or have been incarcerated, helping them navigate SSI applications and requests for replacement Social Security cards, which are deemed critical for successful reintegration.
